Design Team: Trend spotting at Focus 2017

With design season well and truly underway, our Design Team has been out and about, tracking the latest trends due to hit the high streets in 2018.

Art Deco

Geometrics continue to be a prevailing trend with symmetrical shapes such as diamonds, hexagons and honeycomb carrying the perfect mix of modern elegance and retro spirit.

Patterns are often seen in a monochrome palette, with a fusion of chrome and glass, glossy furnishings, satin and fur added to create the glamorous Art Deco theme.

Furniture and materials consist of curved lines and angular shapes, and as Art Deco has many design elements the trend is available to be adapted to any style.

Tropical

The tropical interior trend consists of tropical prints and Caribbean colours – bright, bold and instantly warming. Citrus shades are frequently used in sunshine yellow, orange and ochre, alongside darker tones of blue, greens and pinks, reminiscent of a peacock feather.

Patterns are bold and busy and tropical prints include foliage or fruit-inspired patterns. Feather patterning is also popular – timeless in its style.

Focus at the Design Centre in Chelsea Harbour – part of The London Design Festival – showcases a myriad of creative talent from 120 exhibitors. During the six-day event, visitors from the A&D community are invited to witness innovation whilst gaining inspiration for their upcoming projects.

While browsing the showrooms and exhibits, our designer Mel spotted three main themes.

Tribal

Graphic patterns appear in bright, vibrant colours of electric blue, deep reds, emerald greens and bright pink on natural backgrounds, inspired by Aztec and Moroccan themes. Designs are often hand embroidered or added to a rattan or bamboo base to provide a rustic feel.
