Design Team: Trend spotting at 100% Design, Design Junction & London Design Fair 2017

Continuing with the exciting season that is London Design Week, our Design Team once again took to the capital’s streets to seek out the latest innovations being showcased by the industry’s most established brands.

Cork continually cropped up on worktops and furniture, with specks of bright colour.

Painterly effects on different surfaces were noticed throughout, using deep tones or muted pastels.

Geometrics were once again popular, mainly used on a large scale across surfaces, wallpapers and furniture.

Lighting

Bold shapes were combined with lighting, and geometric patterning used various materials such as wood or fabric. The result was interesting shadow play.

Design Junction & London Design Fair

Following on from 100% Design was Design Junction and the London Design Fair, the former of which acts as a platform for brands to network with design professionals and consumers attending to discover new trends and imaginative products. The show takes place during the annual London Design Festival and features more than 200 leading global design brands across dedicated trade and retail areas.

Combining Tent and Superbrands together, the London Design Fair is held in East London’s Old Truman Brewery building, which in itself is inspiring with urban concrete walls and exposed brick.

Showcasing over 500 exhibitors from 28 countries to an audience of retail buyers, designers, architects and many more, visitors are offered the opportunity to network with brands on the upcoming trends that will dominate the industry in the coming year.

Across the two shows, we spotted several trends that are sure to be integral to the design agenda in 2018/19.

Materials

Another material that stood out from the crowd included glass casting to create a series of botanic panels. By melting glass over botanic matter, stunning bespoke pieces were created. Other materials spotted throughout were steel and cement.

Wood patterning

Wood patterning was extended to fabric and rugs – manipulating the natural material’s appearance by having more exposure and contrast to create a slightly abstract look.

First up, 100% Design – the largest and longest-running design trade event for industry professionals in the UK, which runs for four days in September. It holds an audience of architects, designers, specifiers, retailers and developers, as well as multinational companies looking to source directly for their latest projects, and this year has certainly not disappointed.

With so many trends being exhibited, it was tough selecting just a few to feature, but here are our favourites:

Symmetrical pattern

Fabric and wallpaper were seen with symmetrical and mirror patterning, using various themes such as floral and geometrics. Creating a bold statement and slightly abstract finish, the resulting pieces displayed a kaleidoscopic effect.
