Milan Design Week 2017: Salone del Mobile

The annual design event Salone del Mobile has once again returned for six days (4-9 April) of exhibitions, talks, furniture and product fairs to engage and inspire the A&D community. A staple of the creative calendar, the event attracts over 300,000 visitors from all over the world.

Trends

Woven, lattice and open linear designs were extremely popular across products from chairs to coffee tables and lighting.

Rugs

Stunning rug designs were captured throughout the show, mostly sporting an abstract or geometric design in bold block colours.

Surfaces

Ahura particularly stood out for its beautiful collection of glazed vases and bowls. Engraved patterns on stone and marble materials were also explored, creating art pieces boasting surface detail.

Pattern

Pattern remains mainly geometrical from bold large-scale patterns, to micro patterns. Both florals and damask made a small-scale appearance.

The main event of Milan Design Week, Salone del Mobile is a shrine to inspiring and innovative designs across the key areas of lighting, wall and floor coverings, and furniture.

Each year brings with it a new wave of trends across colour, pattern and texture. Here are the key looks for 2017:

Colour

Neutrals were seen with a greyed off tone and subtle hues of blue. The two predominant colour groups were muted pastels mixed with darker accents, and deep rustic and burnt orange tones, occasionally mixed with teal and largely having a metallic and oxide feel.
