Clerkenwell Design Week 2013

Jim Biddulph, Projects and Materials Manager of Material Lab says: “Last year at Clerkenwell we looked at how the actual tile is made. This year it's all about the end result - the design – and dissecting this delicate process. How do we create texture? How do we apply highly-decorative patterns? How a tile looks and its finish is so crucial to the aesthetics of a space. 

“So we're going to reveal just how we take a blank tile and transform it in a myriad of different ways. Tiles are the real chameleon product of interior design. They can be literally become anything you want, giving you free reign to create truly stunning schemes. It's going to be a learning, inspirational experience, but with lots of fun too with our screenprinting station and free giveaways as well. We're all very excited about it and are looking forward to a great creative event.”

Visitors to the stand will learn about the different methods of decoration used by Johnson Tiles, from state-of-the-art HD digital printing right through to screen printing, and then have a go at screen printing themselves to learn about the design application process. In an exciting collaboration designer partners are producing unique, exclusive designs in homage to Johnson Tiles' rich 100-year heritage in tile production. 

Focusing on the final layer of tile production – the design element where the ‘magic' happens to make a tile unique – visitors will find out all the hidden secrets which make up a beautiful tile. From how surfaces are manipulated to adding texture and applying pattern, everything will be revealed in what promises to be an interactive and illuminating space.

Tiles are the ultimate blank canvas when it comes to turning a space into the spectacular – and this year at Clerkenwell Design Week (21-23 May 2013) Johnson Tiles - in conjunction with its Material Lab resource hub and Here You Are Studio - will be revealing just how its stunning tiles are decorated and finished with a unique hands-on workshop.
