Johnson Tiles at Milan Design Week 2014

Of all the trends on show perhaps the most prominent has been industrial and urban. Concrete, exposed lighting, wiring and metal mesh all featured heavily throughout the week.

Other popular materials included wood, showcased by Ombré, while ‘bringing the outdoors in’ seemed to be a clear theme across the styling of the whole week with the stands at Salone resembling outdoor courtyards filled with raw material and trees.

Alongside bold colours such as teal, neutral palettes also dominated the show, with greys and pastels mixed with peachy pink and coral red used for statement pieces. Patterns have been kept simple this year and one of the shapes of the season is hexagonal, with geometric influences continuing to be popular.

One highlight was the studio of Rossana Orlandi, whose space was beautifully styled, showcasing trend-led products in pastel shades, notably peppermint green.

A key trend on show at the Salone del Mobile and around the design district was metal mesh and punched holes. Continuing the metallic theme was Tom Dixon, exhibiting his iconic style on a peppermint green stand, an extremely popular attraction showcasing the metal elements of his designs.

Our design team has spent the week in Milan soaking up the latest design trends on show at the prestigious Milan Design Week. Among the highlights of the week is Salone del Mobile, one of the world’s leading home furnishing showcases. The five-day exhibition boasts a variety of textures, a riot of colour and a whole host of shapes to inspire the upcoming seasonal design trends.

First up, the team took in the Tortona district, discovering a myriad of boutiques, exhibitions and architecture, from distressed kitchenware to printed fabrics and colour-pop prints.
