Johnson Tiles’ iconic Prismatics range transformed into classic works of art

The beauty of our iconic Prismatics range is the wealth of creative possibilities it provides.

No matter what shade you’re seeking for a specific project, and whether you’re looking for a Gloss or Satin finish, boasting a palette of 68 colours Prismatics can transform any space into a contemporary feast for the eyes.

And now the popular collection has played an integral role in the work of the hugely talented, Manchester-based mosaic artist, Ed Chapman. His stunning pieces involve using shards of Prismatics tiles to create celebrity portraits and bespoke brand artworks.

Marilyn Monroe, Iggy Pop and even the Queen have been treated to Ed’s unique style, for which he uses only Johnson Tiles products.

He explains: “I find the range of colours in Johnson Tiles exciting in terms of how they may be used in mosaics. They range from vivid and modern to subtle sepia-type tones. There's such a range to be able to create features in a portrait. The tiles are excellent quality and break well compared to inferior products that can crumble when deliberately broken.”

Ed first started on his craft after discovering paper mosaics whilst working full time. His first piece was a paper portrait of Kurt Cobain, and after five years he added ceramic tiles to his process.

“I began by choosing subjects I admired: John Lennon, Laurel & Hardy, Elvis, and two works by Vincent van Gogh, among others. Ceramic works take around four weeks to complete. Although each portrait requires a lot of patience, the materials used are simple: tiles, board and adhesive.”

The artist’s latest project is a portrait of Muhammad Ali. His work has been exhibited across the country, and a full gallery of images is available to view at www.edchapman-mosaics.co.uk. We’ve included a few of our favourite pieces below:
