Johnson Tiles' porcelain becomes fine art with Beier exhibition

Tileables is a giant 125m2 mosaic of porcelain tiles, with each 75cm x 75cm tile individually printed by Johnson Tiles with a selection of textures imitating concrete, gravel and mud. The patterns chosen by Beier were originally designed for 3D modeling software, with the work intended to explore decorative art in its relation to surface and pattern and the relationship between the physical and the digital.

Darren Clanford, Creative Director at Johnson Tiles, says: “Our collaboration with Nina Beier and DRAF is a real coup for us. We are working in this way more and more with artists who are recognising the creative opportunities that partnering with design-led manufacturers such as ourselves can bring. This year has already seen us work with textile artist Ptolemy Mann to create a giant colour mural at Clerkenwell Design Week, while we’ll be providing the materials for an equally eye-catching installation at the V&A for London Design Festival 2014. And it is very exciting for us to be involved in Nina Beier’s first UK solo exhibition.

Johnson Tiles’ porcelain products are a real work of art thanks to a new collaboration with artist Nina Beier ahead of her first solo exhibition in London.

The Danish artist’s collection at DRAF (12 Sept-13 Dec) in Camden High Street will feature a variety of her evolving sculptures, with her brand new work Tileablesone of the major highlights.

“As a state-of-the-art manufacturer we can create a product according to an artists’s vision, they then bring it to life and the results can be incredible. This project with DRAF is continuing our mission to bring together artists of all disciplines with the resources, materials and expertise that we have available.”

The tiles for Beier’s Tileables provided by Johnson Tiles will be laid loose on the floor without fixing, so that the installation can be lifted, adapted and changed.
