Clerkenwell Design Week 2014 - Day Three

Patterns

Bold geometric fabrics and prints with ethnic influences really stood out over the course of the three-day event. In particular were STUDIO 23 and Tori Murphy, whose designs combined texture, pattern and colour. In fact, clashing patterns seemed to be a common theme, with an overall feeling of mix and match.

Lighting

In Design Factory, the lighting section was hugely popular. Alongside highlights including Auxilium Salvage and Light Years, Studio Italia Design’s Kelly range captured the emerging trend for lattice and fretwork detailing. Tinsmiths also followed this trend with its Round Bulkhead light in diecast brass.

Texture

Aside from wood, bright colours and patterns, the most apparent trend was texture. The need to touch and feel the different materials being used only went to show how tactile products have become.

The use of wood, in all of its manifestations – whether rough and distressed or smooth and glossy – seemed to be the designer’s material of choice.

In Platform, Jonathan Fields’s bespoke furniture (which we highlighted in our Clerkenwell Design Week preview) is produced from carefully selected timber, and embodies the trend for sleek, polished furniture.

CVA Editions by Judy Clark – a brand debuted at the festival, comprised of teardrop shapes side-tables, in colourful bursts. Overall, colour was seen in an array of moods – from bright and bold to soft, chalky pastels.

Droplets of rain created beautiful reflections on the colourful mural, as the sun decided to re-emerge and shine down on the Farmiloe Building.

And while the rain held off, our design team dashed around to pick out the most exciting and innovative products and materials, from lighting to furniture and everything in between. Here are the key trends they spotted...
