Flying in to redevelop record-breaking rainbow mosaic mural

To recreate this incredible record-breaking mural, we are using our Artile service, which enables us to perfectly reproduce each tile’s unique properties and colour onto new ceramic at our factory in Stoke on Trent.

We started with extensive high-definition photographic analysis, and a detailed tile-by-tile review by the client, to ensure that the new mural replicates Millard Sheets’ original work.

We also developed a new matt cover coating system, adding to Artile’s fully fade-resistant properties, ensuring that the new mural can withstand the strong Hawaiian sunshine. We have also formulated a new bespoke firing curve specifically for the project, to maintain the matt finish and maximise kiln production, minimising losses to less than 0.5%.

It’s been a mammoth 26-week manufacturing period, and we’re now almost at the Rainbow’s end: the final tiles for this project are set to be produced this month (January).

But our work doesn’t end there - each finished tile is being carefully inspected by our team, with the mural laid out piece-by-finished piece, mapped and sequentially numbered by hand by prior to shipping, for ease of installation upon arrival in Hawaii.

Our team is looking forward to seeing this colourful project unveiled when the installation is complete in April 2014, where it will continue to be a vibrant landmark for future generations thanks to our skill and expertise.

Our expertise has reached new heights in Hawaii – we’re currently working on refurbishing and replacing the world’s tallest mosaic mural.

The Rainbow Tower mural at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, designed by renowned artist Millard Sheets, is named in the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Tallest Mosaic, measuring 286 feet high and 26 feet wide, stretching 31 storeys high.

Hilton Hotels have called in our experts as part of the mural’s $4.25m redevelopment, which will see us reproduce every one of the mural’s 16,000 tiles.

The new mural, once finished, will feature more than 31,000 tiles, incorporating a new artwork by Millard Sheets’ son Tony at the base of the ‘Mauka’ mountainside mural.
