Clerkenwell Design Week has once again returned for its three day annual event, attracting designers and architects from across the UK to celebrate the best in creativity for the industry.

Installations

Clerkenwell is known for it inspiring installations throughout the festival. This year, we were particularly impressed with 'Order' by Aldworth James & Bond working with Corian®.

It uses the octagonal form inspired by the Cross of St John, and celebrates the arch as a gateway to the annual event, with its design firmly rooted in the rich history of Clerkenwell.

Also on show was Buzzijungle in Design Fields. Created by Buzzispace, the installation turns meeting space on its head, and offers a playful way for teams to get together, hang out and collaborate. Jonas Van Put is the brains and designer behind the exciting structure.

Pattern

Patterns were prominently geometric designs from simple linear to bold dramatic shapes, and a mix of small and large scale.

Trends

Surface detail captured on table designs caught our eyes, with a mix of organic flowing lines to straight bold impact. The combination of materials is still a key trend, spotted across furniture and coffee tables using marble, copper, concrete and wood etc.

Geometric trends carried through to lighting too, with bold shapes created with the design itself and lights casted from it.

Colour

Muted pastels stood to be strong colour groupings, with different tones mixed together primarily on furniture.

Hues of pink accented with deep burnt browns/oranges were seen most echoing Milan's key colours. Grey tones were prominent throughout, still with hints of blue hues.

Texture

Quite large textures and structures with geometric designs were noticed most throughout the various showrooms and exhibitions.

Now in its eighth year, the festival covers large parts of Clerkenwell and is connected by exhibitions, workshops, showrooms and installations, all showcasing new collections of lighting, furniture, wall coverings, flooring and innovative ideas.

As one of the most important events in the design calendar, we went along to discover the latest trends and innovations.
