The Design Team's trend guide to Amsterdam

The colours of the bikes propped up against Amsterdam’s urban concrete backdrop are a nod to colour trends of the past, present and future. The natural shades of green tie in with 2015-2016’s colour to watch, providing a full spectrum of sea greens to cooled-down yellowish shades. The radiant orchid purple is a reminder of Pantone’s 2014 colour of the year, whilst the maroon red is not too dissimilar from this year’s marsala colour trend.

Colours

With a blush pink colour recently being introduced into the neutral palette, the flowers in the BioMarkt beautifully complement neutral shades. Reminiscent of the current pastel trends for muted sunset shades of pink, orange and purple, the blossoming flowers really show how nature inspires the colours of the home. Such sensory shades add depth from room to room and provide a sense of comfort.

Upcycling

Channelling an alternative arts scene, parts of the city follow the upcycling trend, creating new ways of using objects for different functions than originally intended. This creates a chance to invite unique pieces and design into the home. Hanging shoes containing potted plants is just one example spotted on the streets, showing the design world is daring to be different and constantly thinking outside the box.

Patterns

The Rijksmuseum is dedicated to showcasing art and history from around the globe but it was the exterior that particularly caught the eyes of our Design Team. Celebrating 60 years of the iconic Dutch series, Miffy, giant sculptures inspired by the rabbit stand tall at the museum’s entrance.

Decorated with all kinds of emblems and colours, the sculptures are reminiscent of many of the current design trends. Hugo Kaagman’s Blue Miffy looks as though it has been made up of many different patterned tiles, showing how bold artistic elements and illustration can be implemented in the creation of stunning design.

Amsterdam is a haven of contemporary design and artistic inspiration. The Design Team recently took a trip to soak up the culture and became inspired by some of the finer details in the city that’s brimming with colour, in everything from the flowers and bicycles to the buildings.
