Five key interior design trends that are proving popular in 2014

Texture is an important feature this year, providing a nice contrast to high gloss and smooth finishes. Think of the natural grain of wood, intriguing paint finishes or 3D patterns. Interesting combinations of flat surfaces alongside more tactile textures and interesting materials can really provide a point of interest to a room. Experimenting with textures offers a real opportunity for creativity.

In what may seem to contrast with the bold and bright accent colours mentioned above, many designers are still favouring subdued, neutral shades and chalky tones. We have also seen the arrival of ‘new neutrals’ – darker, more saturated alternatives to greys, including navy, plum and aubergine hues that still blend well with other colours.

Designers have not been afraid to breathe a little personality into interiors in 2014, with many choosing to liven up a space with vivid hints of colour or bold blocks of bright shades. The use of strong accent colours can often add a real statement and help to refresh or modernise neutral décor.
