Five key interior design trends that are proving popular in 2014

Combinations of textures

Texture is an important feature this year, providing a nice contrast to high gloss and smooth finishes. Think of the natural grain of wood, intriguing paint finishes or 3D patterns. Interesting combinations of flat surfaces alongside more tactile textures and interesting materials can really provide a point of interest to a room. Experimenting with textures offers a real opportunity for creativity.

Our Savoy Décor fitting provides an intriguing contrast to the smoother Savoy ceramic wall tile, providing subtle, geometric 3D detail that allows for plenty of creative possibilities.

Warming neutral shades

In what may seem to contrast with the bold and bright accent colours mentioned above, many designers are still favouring subdued, neutral shades and chalky tones. Ideal for architectural or commercial design projects, neutral shades are ideal for interiors that will stand the test of time, while giving you a solid base to add your own unique touch. We have also seen the arrival of ‘new neutrals’ – darker, more saturated alternatives to greys, including navy, plum and aubergine hues that still blend well with other colours.

Our new Kerastar range comes in a variety of on-trend neutral colours, helping to make it one of most popular ranges for commercial fit-outs.

Natural

Nature offers an enduring theme for designers and one that has been prominent in 2014, especially in the use of synthetic materials. Organic materials, fabrics and furnishing remain popular, but replicating images from nature or mimicking the appearance and textures of natural materials through environmentally friendly alternatives is also key.

Our Natural Tones range of glazed porcelain and ceramic tiles is inspired by marble and stone, but uses digital printing techniques to offer all the timeless style of those materials but without costing the earth.

Bold statement colours

Designers have not been afraid to breathe a little personality into interiors in 2014, with many choosing to liven up a space with vivid hints of colour or bold blocks of bright shades. The use of strong accent colours can often add a real statement and help to refresh or modernise neutral décor.

Our slim format Chroma wall tiles come in 21 different on-trend shades and are ideal for colour blocking or adding a colourful flourish to residential or commercial interiors.

Geometric Patterns

The desire for geometric design shows no sign of abating, with structural patterns prevalent on everything from fashion, furniture and logo design to full-scale interior fit-outs. Our forthcoming collaboration with London design studio David David will be a strong example of this, recreating Islamic-inspired geometric patterns – more information on that soon. We have also seen designers daring to mix and match patterns that might traditionally be seen as clashing, such as geometrics alongside stripes or florals.
