Splash of colour at CAA Gallery

“It’s just one room but I just basically went for it and did something quite mad,” she said.

“Those tiles were actually based on my hand-woven artworks and they have this kind of blurred finish to them, which gives them quite a different feeling.”

Johnson Tiles is collaborating with Ptolemy Mann again to create a giant tiled mural to launch the new Prismatics range at Clerkenwell Design Week 2014.

The designs were then transformed into 20x20cm tiles through Johnson Tiles’ bespoke Artile service, using red and magenta digital transfers.

Ptolemy said she was really excited by the project as it gave her the chance to do something really experimental with the bathroom walls.

Textile artist and colour expert Ptolemy Mann, a CAA member for more than 15 years, was chosen to design the interior of the bathroom for the charity-run gallery’s new home.

Ptolemy worked closely with Johnson Tiles to design a unique set of printed Artiles to resemble handmade textile patterns. The concept was based on a technique used in weaving called ikat, which involves dyeing the yarn before it is weaved to created a blurring effect.

With walls awash with colour, this bathroom boasts more than just a little artistic flair. But then the facilities needed to be appropriately eye-catching, as they serve visitors to London’s Contemporary Applied Arts (CAA) Gallery in London.
