Johnson Tiles partners with Staffordshire University to set creative design brief

Our Design Team loves nothing more than helping to nurture up-and-coming talent. Alongside our day-to-day design work, our partnerships with events such as New Designers, and links to universities – from Staffordshire to Central Saint Martins – means we get to collaborate with students at the very beginning of their career.

Maria Swain, Designer at Johnson Tiles, said: “The students have now visited the factory and the project is underway. We are excited to see the results!”

This week, designers Amy Pears and Maria Swain met with second year students at Staffordshire University to set a surface pattern design brief. The group has been asked to create a collection of wall tile designs, to suit either the residential or contract market.

To be undertaken over a six-week period, the students are encouraged to get out and about, to explore and research the latest trends, in order to develop their ideas through experimentation distilled into their own, unique style.

The aim of the brief is to introduce the students to the current market, through allowing them to experience the entire making process, from starting point to final collection.

The project will count towards the second module of this year’s syllabus, and in three weeks, Amy and Maria will visit the university to provide mentoring and advice, before being invited to view the final collections next month.

Keep an eye out for more updates on the designers’ progress here on the blog, and across our social media platforms.
